Call to protect the environment

The House has passed a dangerous bill that takes aim at crucial clean air protections. It will speed up climate change and add pollution to the air, endangering the public health. Now that bill is moving to the Senate, where we have a chance to stop it  permanently. Do not let them put the special interests of the oil and gas industry ahead of the environment!

The Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management finalized crucial limits on this pollution last year—but if the Senate approves this legislation, because it uses a rare legislative vehicle called the “Congressional Review Act,”this new bill not only kills this reform but bars the Bureau of Land Management from adopting a similar rule in the future.

When the House voted, 11 Republicans crossed the party lines to stand up for environmental protection, so we have a good chance of  defeating this bill in the Senate.

Dear __________,

My name is xxxx and I am calling to let the Senator know that I would like him/her to oppose the new environmental bill that just passed the house. If passed, this legislation will roll back measures to prevent the waste of natural gas and reduce unnecessary pollution from oil and gas operations.

How to Register to Vote from Overseas

Just voted in November? Still traveling or living overseas? You should register and request your absentee ballot to vote again in 2017 to ensure your election office knows where to send your ballot for any upcoming special elections for federal office. Some states are also holding gubernatorial or other statewide elections this year.

The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) recommends all overseas U.S. citizens send in a completed Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) early every year.  The FPCA is the registration and ballot request form accepted by all states and territories.

You can use the FPCA online assistant, complete the fillable PDF version, or pick up a hardcopy version from your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  Be sure your contact information is accurate in case your election office needs to reach you.

If you’d like more information on the Federal Voting Assistance Program or need help with the absentee voting process please go to or call FVAP at 703-588-1584 (toll free 1-800-438-VOTE or DSN 425-1584) or email

Don’t let Anti-LGBTQ discrimination be legalized!

Sen. Cruz is planning to introduce the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA), which, codifies discrimination against LGBTQ people into federal law. FADA prohibits the government from holding any business or person accountable for discriminating against LGBTQ people.

Because FADA is likely to be just one of many attacks from the Trump-Pence administration, we must show that there is massive opposition to FADA and any similar legislation.

But this legislation isn’t just dangerous for LGBTQ people. People, businesses and institutions would be able to legally discriminate against single mothers, unmarried couples and anyone who has sex outside of marriage with the blessing of the federal government. Those discriminated against would have no avenue for recourse, should FADA pass.

Show the Trump administration that when they attack the LGBTQ community, they attack all of us.

Please call your senators now!

We need one more vote against DeVos! You must act now!

Last week, Republican Sens. Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski announced that they would vote against Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of education, Betsy DeVos.

So now we need just one more Republican vote against DeVos to defeat her. That vote is crucial. If the heat is turned up to an extreme, one of those Republican senators could rethink. A senator must feel that the trouble he or she would get in with constituents for supporting DeVos would be greater than the trouble with Trump for voting against her.

Betsy DeVos doesn’t know enough about education to run our nation’s education system. She doesn’t believe in the power of public education, and she doesn’t know anything about disabled kids’ right to education.

Time is short before her confirmation hearing. You must phone, and phone now!

Dear Senator ________,

My name is xxxx and I am calling to let the Senator know that I would like him/her to oppose the appointment of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education.

I believe in my community’s public schools. Betsy DeVos believes in school privatization and vouchers. She has worked to undermine efforts to regulate Michigan charters, even when they fail. Her hostility towards public schools alone disqualifies her. Supporting DeVos would be a betrayal of disabled children in our state, and of the education system as a whole.

Steve Bannon can recommend extrajudicial killing of US Citizens

Yesterday, the President downgraded the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of National Intelligence from the National Security Council. They will now attend on an ad hoc basis. They have been effectively replaced with Steve Bannon. Bannon has no government, intelligence, or high-level military experience; his experience is leading a propaganda outlet (Breitbart News) that peddles nationalist and white nationalist viewpoints.

This would be deeply concerning in and of itself. But one of the jobs of the NSC is to oversee a secret panel that authorizes the assassination of “enemies of the United States Government” – including American citizens. These targeted killings are fully authorized by law under the Congressional military authorization act following 9/11. There is no trial, no due process, and no public record of the decision or the assassination itself.

Just to recap the absurdity: the President of the United States has appointed a known propagandist, nationalist, and white supremacist to replace the highest military advisor in the country on a council that authorizes secret, legal, targeted killings of American citizens (and others) without due process.

What You Can Do:

– Call your Senators and Congressperson this week and demand that they publicly and legislatively oppose Trump’s appointment of Steven Bannon to the NSC.
– Spread the word about this news to your networks, since this is not getting a lot of coverage right now.
