Monitoring Foreign Media

Here’s one thing that Americans abroad are especially well situated for – we can monitor the dealings our government has with other countries. By tracking the news media in the countries where we live, especially local language media, we are pick able to pick up nuance in US relationships with foreign countries in a way that cash-strapped news outlets with few foreign bureaus can achieve. We can track host country media and share what we learn with other Americans and the mainstream US media.

This thought was inspired by a blog post from The Atlantic, which put it this way: “Keep a sharp eye on what the foreign press is covering. They’re watching what he’s doing in their countries and what their governments are doing to cultivate the U.S. president.”
